Elvis shook Nixon hand at the White House, but why did Hoover not want to meet Elvis?
Ten days after Elvis Presley met with President Richard Nixon at White House in 1970, the King was granted a private tour of FBI Headquarters. This 1971 FBI memo recounts Presley's visit and the singer's strange observations about the Beatles, Jane Fonda, and the Smothers Brothers. But unlike Richard Nixon a vacationing J. Edgar Hoover missed a personal audience with The King.
It have been speculated that the shy FBI director was actually hiding in his office until he was sure that the freaky Elvis had left the building.
