However, thank goodness Elvis fans took the initiative to take their cameras and capture the some candid shots of Elvis on stage. Elvis fashioned jumpsuits were first inspired by his childhood comic hero Captain Marvel down the lighting bolt which became the TCB design
We all know Elvis Presley as the King of Rock and Roll but of course as well as remembering him as the fantastic musician and character he was, we all remember his unfortunate demise too. For years there has been much deliberation as to what could have been different in Elvis life that could have perhaps changed the outcome. Could the people around him been an issue, demons of his own, or could the fact that he spent so much of his time in sin city caused problems for this prolific star? In his final years Elvis Presley was a star of Las Vegas and there was loads of hype surrounding him, it would be his new home for some time. Of course it was a city where nothing shocked in those days, you would see the likes of
Frank Sinatra casually being dealt a hand of Blackjack without drawing any attention but this was big news even for Vegas! Presley was worried about making his debut in Vegas, he had decided to ditch Hollywood after unrelenting contracts had him producing back to back movies without much flexibility and he felt he had no control, so he wanted to go somewhere where he felt he could do what he loved but he was concerned that the people may not welcome him with open arms but he need not have worried!
Elvis was living the life of decadence that was only expected of a Vegas star. After signing a contract, he was paid $100,000 a week which would be roughly £2 million today and was purchased 14 Cadillac and diamond studded Rolex watches, he definitely knew how to spend. Initially it was thought that Vegas and Elvis would be a match made in heaven, but later it became apparent that it would be his downfall. Because of Elvis Presley Las Vegas became more popular than ever, people who weren’t normally a fan of gambling all flooded to the crème de la crème of casinos to see him perform. Of course in between watching him sing his heart out and do his famous leg tremble they couldn’t resist the odd dabble on the casino games. Now with mobile casinos left, right and centre theres no way to escape it.
Another issue for Elvis was that he was an insomniac as he was up super early every morning ready to be physically active, so he had a lot of spare time on his hands that could be a recipe for disaster when you are in Vegas. He was married to
Priscilla and had a daughter Lisa Marie but there was no doubt that he was restless in his family life and was having one night stands but she never really spoke up about it even though she was becoming increasingly unhappy.
Along with his weight gain it was noticeable that his clothes began to get more flamboyant too, with the sparkles getting brighter, the belt buckles getting bigger and so on. Soon people were also quite alarmed by his performances on stage when he slurred his words and forget words and sometimes ramble on. Later it was found out that Elvis has 5 Doctors prescribing medication to him which had caused this behaviour but the Colonel at the hotel had insisted that whatever the case the show must go on. After splitting up with Priscilla
Elvis then saw Linda Thomson for the next 4 years who was with him during his decline. He was becoming careless leaving his medication around and he needed to be taken care of quite a lot. Elvis completed his final show in Vegas in December 1976 and returned to Graceland to get ready for another tour. In 1977 he was later found dead in his bathroom which was initially reported as heart failure but later documents suggested it was an overdose. Where those bright lights and decadent days of Vegas a cause in his demise? We suspect so.
